Freshened up with new furniture & a sultry mix of grey, black & gold hues, Tsunami looks ready to reassert itself among Clapham´s cognoscenti. This modern Japanese eatery may be something of an old hand in the fashionable restaurant stakes, but the cooking is as fresh as ever, with the emphasis on clean strong flavours & beautiful presentation. Dishes are modishly intended for grazing & sharing & the kitchen is happy to cross borders & break with convention. Zingy ‘new-style’ salmon sashimi is seared in olive oil & drizzled with ponzu sauce, lamb is served with oriental mushrooms, creamed leeks & wasabi pepper sauce, & there´s ‘awesome’ sushi for those who want it. Warm & cold sakès are on offer, although most of the sparkly crowd seem to head for the white wines & cocktails. A swish new bar with a 2am licence at weekends is an added bonus.
Tables are in high demand at peak dinner times, but early diners get a 20% discount on food; at lunch you can get out for under £15 a head.

Tsunami is something of a legend in Clapham. It's remained a busy and bustling restaurant, tucked away just off the high street, for well over ten years. And even on a filthy night of pouring rain it was chockablock at 8pm on a Monday.
Chris was initially a little apprehensive about his choice of venue for a birthday celebration meal, but this was on account of my kids. No worries here, I told him, they've always been quite adventurous in their tastes (although I took the precaution of warning my 11 year old daughter that she wouldn't get any ketchup!). And anyway, we were to be Chris's guests.....
As a party of three adults, three teenagers and my 11 year old, we all fitted very snugly around a circular table - so right for communal dining, which is how we started the meal.
Obligatory spicy edamame kicked us off whilst we made our selections. And to help the process Chris picked a Riesling Sylvaner, inspirationally called 'Rivaner' from........Luxembourg. What?
Never had a wine from Luxembourg before. Went down just fine though!!
Right, so we all tucked in to some yummy stuff. Yellowfin marinated with a liberal hint of sesame, chicken gyoza, visually stunning tempura prawns that didn't disappoint in taste especially when combined with the creamy sweet chilli dip, and snow crab Shumai dumplings which were totally authentically seaside flavoured.
Well that course was polished off jolly swiftly and without any teenage whingeing for which assembled parents were grateful. So we moved onto the main course. I think I'm right in saying all kids' mains were sizzling teriyakis and, to the relief of the ravenous lads, healthy portions they were too. Grown ups chose three different dishes. Mr and Mrs N chose Truffle beef with wild mushrooms and hoi sin duck breast respectively and I plumped for spirals of pork belly. Of course we all had a taste of each others and, rather smugly, I can safely say mine was then best (being the polite guest that I am)!
Ooh the Greenstone Heathcote Aussie Shiraz was a decent little mouthwash too. Chris tells me he chose both wines from the recommendations of the week - good advice, I'd say.
As stuffed as we were, we all had to go for a pud. Faves were salted caramel banoffee and hot chocolate yazzi. Grown ups were forced to try out the plum dessert wine which was served over crushed ice, making it feel like a poolside cocktail (thank goodness lacking a silly umbrella).
We all happily groaned our way home - we were loving Tsunami.
